      >even more stagnant and derivative
I've been thinking about this a lot recently. Archeology/paleontology/geology and probably some other fields have frozen "the present" at 1930 or something because everything newer than that is hopelessly contaminated with nuclear radiation from 20th-century tests. We currently live in a world where the web is already too polluted with AI content (mostly text but now images too) for it to be real training data for a new AI system. It would become trained on wrong AI bullshit and produce even wronger AI bullshit. At some point people will freeze the "present" for AI training data at 2010 or something, or else AI is only down from here. And if it is frozen, that means it will be trivial to identify an AI because they will have no knowledge of any event more recent than that.

The only new input required are a few innovative pictures from the top 0.1% of artgays for stable diffusion to learn and understand everything about that new style/flavor/whatever you wanna call it. There was an argument I remember coming up a few years ago in regards to truckers. It was probably about the time of the Tesla semi truck announcement. Basically boils down to the fact that tons of truckers are in their 50s and 60s, they aren't people who will be going back to college and getting some white collar jobs. We should all consider the inverse of this situation and the potential ramifications as well.
Tons of people who work in front of a screen are 100% totally incapable of doing anything but that. There are legions of socially moronic, autistic, emotionally unstable people with no other marketable skills. These people are 100% dead weight who will literally never be able to adapt to any other lifestyle than the one a super easy white collar or WFH environment affords them

Programmers can probably retrain into accounting and other professions that require functional but not PhD level math. With that said companies that live or die by their app/website aren't going to leave that to an AI, it's a useful tool but they'll want a person they can fire signing off on the final code. It might reduce the number of white collar programming jobs per company although work tends to expand to meet the capacity of the employees.

  16. 1 year ago

Is there any actual real example of someone getting fired and being replaced by stable diffusion?

      Anonymous

Probably not yet, but things like so called AI upscaling is making its way into videogames for art assets. It won't be long until its normal to see games with totally AI generated textures, slowly eating into the market for actual industry artists.
Thousands of websites right now run chatbots for customer assistance and the good ones are so conversational that it seems like a real person. This same tech applies to telephone customer support lines too, its not just a prompt that tells you to press a number if you have X problem, its an automated human voice talking to you in full sentences.

This tech is exploding and even 1 year from now its going to be taking jobs from people who have zero backup plans in life.

Not yet, AI art is still in its infancy. When people say they're afraid of being replaced by AI, they don't mean now, they mean a decade from now.
It's like saying are there any examples of coachmen been replaced by cars, when the only cars available have a speed of 5mph and make noise that will shatter your eardrums.

Also a lot artists survive off of commissions, not a full time job, once AI art becomes good enough those people are the first ones to go.

Fricking morons, Art is a way of expressing yourself, the greatest work of arts do that. El Eternauta is the perfect exemple of that, the author pretty much died writing this. TempleOs is another good one, It's like taking a dive into Terry's psyche. I don't give a frick about these generic twitter commisions and ai prompts, they mean nothing. Things like nausicaa valley of the wind, Serial Experiments Lain and Superman (≈1940 version) are real art, they have a meaning.

I think you're mostly right, but there will inevitably be great artists who learn how to express themselves via AI, they just haven't happened yet because the genre is in its infancy. What we have now is a flood of absolute fricking dogshit with no filter.

That's also the crucial difference between visual art and music. Music has always been a flood of dogshit, but there are filters all over the place. Radio, playlists, rym, they are all filters. Social media is a fricked up filter because it's linked more to the consumer's individuality than the artist's. I don't have answers for this, just noting that everything is changing real fast at the moment, and its not like it wasn't already changing real fast.

As an artist, I'm not depressed about AI making art, because I still enjoy making it and something else (whether it be AI or another human) doing it as good or better than me doesn't really bother me. But I am worried about my future financially speaking. Sure, you could say "get a different job" or whatever but I feel like no matter what I pick i'll either: 1) have no relevant experience or 2) it'll be something else that'll be replaced by AI in a matter of years.
The biggest problem with AI is how it threatens job security imo, not just with artists but with just about every profession. The job market is already competitive enough and I can't help but think AI is just going to result in mass homelessness and poverty while the rich get even richer, which isn't a good formula for societal stability.

Yeah I remember sounding this alarm for years at this point. I'm anything but communist but if AI takes 90+% of jobs and there aren't enough new jobs being generated maybe it really is the best way forward. Capitalism cannot function if 90% people don't have a job.

I'm in a similar boat with music. I play a couple of instruments and occasionally compose, but I do it for its own sake. I'm also savvy enough to know that making a living from it is an uphill battle so I'm in different career that's profitable but one that I still enjoy decently enough. Artpoors just seen delusional in that they think they deserve to be paid well no matter the market conditions. It's simple supply and demand, "artsy/musical/other fine arts" fields will always have a very heavy imbalance against the worker's favor. Unless you're pavoratti-tier in talent, you'll probably be working extremely long hours for a slave income, assuming you are good enough to make money to begin with.

All artists have a fantasy about being able to live off of their work even though only a small portion of them get to do it professionally. However being able to live off making music is even more unlikely because you have to be a celebrity or film composer, so I think most people who make music have accepted it's just a hobby

I mean its possible, you just need a robot arm to hold a pencil or a shoot paint onto a paper or canvas correctly, but you have to build that mount, I mean most people have a 3D printers, so they got something that can move on a xyz axis. I love artists that aren't "artists" (read that as israelites that want to murder everyone).
I fully sympathize with their plight. Pure artistic renditions, such as paintings, are very hard to monetize, and are usually only ever done for a particular buyer on commission. They're losing a whole bunch of potential buyers to a system that may potentially be using their art as reference. I'm not just concerned for altruistic reasons for them though. If this issue isn't solved fairly, then say hello to a future of paintings being sold with drm attached to them. The horror.
So please, remember to support good artists in this time of transition for them, engineers are very much like artists too.

Its the reaction really. We got a really good piece of tech that corporations have had for a while into the hands of the people and the first reaction from the art community was to attempt shame every major art hosting site into banning ai art and attacking people who used the ai as a tool in any capacity. Its become almost political, like if you use ai art you are a bad person with no talent and deserve to be harassed.

The intention is to replace every job, they're just too lazy to replace the manual work but the farm romanticists forget that tons of robotics have been in use in farm labor already.

      [...]
I'm a professional 3d artist and amateur game dev. Eventually everything I do will be automated too, same for every job. Artists aren't special and the community needs to be calling for UBI, not attacking people for finding the tech cool.

Game Development is so many layers of process, action, simulation and reliant on finding a balance + fun (and having AI find fun is a dubious concept, statistic approaches just produce skinner box games as already seen) that you probably would need some post-singularity AI to pull it off.

Not even coal mining will be left. We'll have AI powered robots doing that soon. So either you're smart enough to go into AI/ robotics or you're obsolete and have no reason to exist anymore.

      >No reason to exist as a drone for the rich anymore
That's what it actually is about. If the wealthy don't see value in you they'll be fine with you dying in an artificial famine.

Automation can be used to empower. The demoralization propaganda of AI as a means to make you irrelevant is meant to keep you from thinking of ways to use it for your own ends and goals. They want you to feel like a worthless drone to break your sense of critical thought and maintain their lie of artificial scarcity. Don't fall for it.

Think about it. "Get a different job" is a weak response, one demanding you abandon dreams. Don't fall for it. Those "real jobs" are on the chopping block too. Part of the idea is to foster such divisions. Really this "artists will be replaced" talk is a propaganda format. think about it. Why the frick should higher amounts of automation mean you do more menial labor? That makes no sense. It's bullshit peddling through and through.

True. However it is short sighted to assume anything with regard to AI and what it means to artwork either way. However it does communicate a more clear general intent, one that has been clear for years. The purpose of automation is a genocidal one and has been the whole time. I just didn't realize they'd be this blatant about it.

You don't feel threatened because AI music is absolute shit, AI Music research and development has been intentionally blocked and stalled because it touches the israelites' turf of the music industry. AI art went forward only because it automates their money laundering operations in art without having to involve some random bucko taping bananas to a wall

It can be argued that AI can't produce true art or accurately convey a real person's artistic vision. It's still a death knell for the industry though because no corporate suit is going to shell out thousands to hire a pro artist when they feel they can get adequate work done with a $20 / mo AI subscription or whatever.

I'm interested in seeing whether the artist pushback will begin resulting in lawsuits given the amount of plagiarism involved. Like what's going to happen when an artist can prove that their IP was scraped for an AI marketing campaign? Lawyers are probably going to be the only ones with jobs left at the end of it all.

It isn't at all since a lot of that conceptual art relies on narrative encoding that is simply absent from AI generated artwork. This has been exhaustively explained and every version, module and iteration seen still fails to do that. There is an accuracy limit, there is the inability to keep it on track without lots of helping hands. A concept artist that actually works in the industry is reliable and able to produce such stuff without those caveats. Digital artists are often technicians by habit of how they make use of art programs as well.

It might be different in your country but if they stopped paying shit wages then maybe people would apply for them. But you are right trades will be replaced much later for one simple reason. So much heat for art which doesnt even have celeb culture. Can you guys imagine the absolute fricking chaos when a good music AI comes and people start generating music based of a popular KPOP group with their voices. Literal worldwar 3.

Copilot is different first because Microsoft is charging for it, second in multiple cases people could actually track down exactly where the code that was being generated was taken from, and third no one actually knows how it works or whether Microsoft has taken measures to protect licenses. Stable Diffusion is free and open source, anyone can run it locally and see how it works.

If image search wasn't such a hard problem, you could do this for overtrained stable diffusion models as well

One should consider bombing servers if possible if they see this as an attack on their identity and humanity. The genocidal intention means it is self defense to do so. Attacking the particularly vulnerable power grids is another route...

Tbh this has all made me quite depressed. I truly loved the process, but also the community. I have to admit that I also craved the validation more so than money, it felt good being acknowledged by people, especially other artists I looked up to. Met lots of friends in the twitter artist circle and the encouragement to improve together as art friends was wonderful.

But now it's kinda fricked, community is in a depressing state. The mega surge of all AI art which is better than 90% of artists results in the community being result focused rather than process focused. The ego boost a mediocre artist could get before for being lucky with the algorithm wont happen as theres so much content now that it pales in comparison.

I wish I did full time art instead of doing comp sci in uni as a way to support myself. Just to have some more of those magical moments and something special to share with my art friends. I didnt know I would miss it so much till it was gone 🙁

    Oh well

welcome to what us sound artists have experienced for the last decades or so. We just make and play music for free just for fun and the enjoyment. there's 0 money in it, we even lose money for it. That'll be the future for you.

      It's worse than that.
By showing their willingness to automate visual expression and writing, they show a very basic message from the people who run such businesses: We do not care about your voice.
So why care for them? Fricking them is all that is left, they'll automate everything if they can. They don't care about humanity and should be punished for it.

If you ever worked in anything technical or artistic, you'd know most of the work is mindless and boring as frick. There's no problem trying to automating at least some of it.

I know there will be some people trying to automate everything. Literally having a whole anime series created from a single prompt. And I have no doubt some of those people might even earn success and the wealth from it. But it doesn't change the fact so called AI generated art is just another tool.

If you open MS Paint, draw a circle and use the fill tool to color it, you're already using some form of automation because you're not painting each pixel by hand. AI generated art is basically a more complex version of that. If you disagree, you might as well not use computers or smarphones at all.

          >An AI generating an entire picture is the same as the digital version of using a flatedge
I have done drawing by hand, analog and digital and yeah I know how much time it can be. I have also used MJ, SD and DALLE2. So when I say that, it comes from a place of knowing what I am talking about. Tools that aide in the process of developing an artwork are not what you are seeing with prompt driven NN art. The point is to write a line and have an AI generate the pictures. Paintovers, Inpainting/Outpainting and Img2Img sure, does provide layers of editing to the process but the main picture is still AI driven. It is not your voice, it is the fiefdom of the AI that you pass for access to. The cloud I already believe to have been a mistake and the kind of power centralized internet infrastructure, privatized social media and such are all created a kind of monopolizing force that is extremely dangerous for individual freedom. The hatred of human expression is found throughout the social media landscape, AI art is but the next step of that.

I'd get it more if it was the 2000s where the quality of amateur art on the internet was laughably low and communities were much smaller, but even before AI there were already so many people being so good at what they do that I was intimidated way before all of this. It's hard to stand out or feel special when there is so much competition so I don't really see ai as having changed too much in that regard, the only difference is that the crowding of content was created was a machine

True artists will never be replaced. Michaelangelo, Zdzisław Beksiński, Jan Matejko, Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, these are all figures that work will be analyzed, admired and studied for as long as we humans stand on Earth. All AI does is filter all these Twitter "artists" and their shitty furry OCs, commissions that cost a small fortune and their space-high ego.

There's certainly some autists in /ic/ raging over AI art.
A lot of the rage seems to be toward gays who call themselves artists and put in zero effort in the drawing and all that shit.

Why, tho? Did they read sensationalist articles and actually BELIEVED them? Stock photo and clip art companies are in danger, sure. But AI is still can't really replace artist working for company: it have no memory*, can't iterate on images*, can't consistently draw characters it doesn't have in dataset*, etc, etc. Working as an artist in a company is much more than "prompt in, image out". It's very interactive, with lots of back and forth.
*yes, I know there's ways to do that, but it's flawed and require too much tinkering
